Sam Bradley

Samson Hiscock Bradley was born on March 29, 1871, in Grand Bank, Newfoundland & Labrador, to Christianna Buffett Pardy of Grand Bank and Samuel Bradley, a fisherman from Bedchester, England. At the age of 12, Sam followed in his father's footsteps and began his maritime adventures as a young deckhand aboard his uncle's fishing boat. In 1897, he married Deborah Jane Buffett, and the next year, he became the captain of the Water Sprite, a 50-ton schooner. For about 20 years, Sam lived the challenging yet rewarding life of a Grand Bank schoonerman. At 68, in 1939, he decided to document his sea adventures. Sadly, two years later, on September 2, 1941, Sam passed away from cancer, diagnosed after surgery for an unrelated fall.
